Real Money Tips That Actually Work When You're Broke & Stressed

I’m not gonna lie to you. Right now I’m juggling rent, bank payments, LDR with my husband, and even AdSense policy violations on my blog. It’s a lot. A few weeks ago I was panicking. I wanted to buy a car. I wanted to start TikTok shop. I wanted to fix everything at once. And you know what happened? Nothing got fixed and I felt worse. So I stopped. And I made 3 new rules. These are the real money tips that are actually keeping me afloat in Dubai right now. No fluff. No "just drink coffee at home" advice. Just stuff that works when you’re stressed and the dirhams are tight.

If you’re in the same boat, this is for you.

Rule 1: Survival First, Dreams Later

This was the hardest one. My husband and I had big plans - car, business, travel. But our rent was due and DIB was calling. We had to choose: fund the dream or keep a roof over our heads.

We chose the roof.

What this looks like:

1. List your non-negotiables: Rent, food, DEWA, phone, transport, minimum debt payments

2. Everything else goes on pause. Even if it hurts. Especially if it hurts.

3. Tell your partner: "We’re on survival mode for X months. Then we revisit the dreams.

"Pausing doesn’t mean quitting. It means protecting your future self so you CAN do the dreams later without debt.

Rule 2: The 50/30/20 Rule... But Make It Dubai

You’ve heard 50% needs, 30% wants, 20% savings. Cute. But in Dubai with high rent? That breaks. Here’s my version that’s working:

  • 60% Needs: Rent, bills, groceries, transport, debt minimums
  • 20% "Buffer": This is for surprise bills, medical, or if salary is late. It’s not savings yet. It’s peace of mind.
  • 10% Wants: Yes, you get to live. 1 shawarma. 1 coffee with a friend. 1 thing so you don’t feel like a robot.
  • 10% Growth: This could be paying extra on debt, or $10 to savings, or a course. Something for future-you.
If 10% growth feels impossible, start with 1%. The point is to build the habit.

Rule 3: Track Every Dirham for 7 Days

I hate budgeting apps. So I used notes on my phone. For 7 days I wrote: Date | What | How much | Was it a need or want?

I found out I was spending 400 AED a month on "small" deliveries and taxi rides. That’s a DEWA bill. Awareness is painful but it’s power. You can’t fix what you don’t see.

5 Dirty-Little Money Tips Nobody Tells You

1. Negotiate everything, even if you’re shy
Call your internet, phone, and insurance company. Say: "I’m a loyal customer but I need a better rate or I have to cancel." I saved 60 AED/month on my phone plan with one 5-minute call.

2. Sell 1 thing this week
Open your closet, kitchen, or storage. That air fryer you used twice? That bag? List it on Facebook Marketplace or Dubizzle. The goal isn’t to get rich. The goal is to create 200-500 AED of breathing room THIS week.

3. Do a "No-Spend Weekend"
Friday to Sunday. No online shopping. No delivery. No mall. Cook at home, walk, free beach, movie night at home. It resets your brain and saves ∼200-300 AED. Try it once a month.

4. Swap paid tools for free ones
Cancel 2 subscriptions you’re not using. Use Canva free instead of Pro. Use Google Sheets instead of paid budget apps. That 40 AED/month adds up to 480 AED/year.

5. Separate "Wants Money" from "Stress Money"
When you’re stressed you spend to feel better. I get it. So I made an envelope in my notes app called "Stress Money" - 50 AED. When I want to impulse buy, I ask: "Can this come from Stress Money?" If not, I wait 24 hours. 9/10 times I don’t want it anymore.

What NOT To Do When You’re Panicking
  1. Don’t take new loans to pay old loans unless it’s a real emergency. It just delays the problem.
  2. Don’t ignore the statements. Open them. Even if it makes you sick. Avoidance = more fees.
  3. Don’t compare your chapter 3 to someone’s chapter 20 on Instagram. That car, that trip, that shop... you don’t see their debt.
FAQ

Q: How do I start budgeting if I have 0 left after bills?
A: Start with tracking. Even 0 teaches you where money leaks. Then find 1 thing to cut or 1 thing to sell. 50 AED saved is still a win.
Q: Is it bad that I had to pause my business goals?
A: No. A paused goal is not a dead goal. It’s a protected goal. You’ll come back to it stronger.

You’re not bad with money. You’re not a failure. You’re just in a hard season.

And hard seasons end. But they end faster when we’re honest, when we make a plan, and when we stop beating ourselves up.

Start with 1 rule from this list today. Just one.
