Real Money Tips That Actually Work When You're Broke & Stressed

I’m not gonna lie to you. Right now I’m juggling rent, bank payments, LDR with my husband, and even AdSense policy violations on my blog. It’s a lot. A few weeks ago I was panicking. I wanted to buy a car. I wanted to start TikTok shop. I wanted to fix everything at once. And you know what happened? Nothing got fixed and I felt worse. So I stopped. And I made 3 new rules. These are the real money tips that are actually keeping me afloat in Dubai right now. No fluff. No "just drink coffee at home" advice. Just stuff that works when you’re stressed and the dirhams are tight.  If you’re in the same boat, this is for you. Rule 1: Survival First, Dreams Later This was the hardest one. My husband and I had big plans - car, business, travel. But our rent was due and DIB was calling. We had to choose: fund the dream or keep a roof over our heads.  We chose the roof. What this looks like: 1. List your non-negotiables: Rent, food, DEWA, phone, transport, minimum debt payments 2. ...

Why Your AC Smells Weird in Dubai + 3 Quick Fixes Before You Call a Technician

If your AC suddenly smells like wet socks, mold, or something burning… welcome to Dubai summer club 😭

Happened to me last July at 2am. Woke up thinking something died in the vent. Nope. Just my AC begging for help.

After panicking + Googling + calling a technician once for 250 AED… I learned 3 quick fixes you can try in 10 mins. Saved me twice since then.

Why AC Smells Happen in UAE:

Dubai/Ajman humidity + dust + AC running 18hrs/day = perfect recipe for mold, dust buildup, and burnt dust smell. 90% of “bad AC smell” posts I see = 1 of these 3 issues.

Smell #1: Musty/Moldy/Sock Smell

Cause: Mold + bacteria growing on wet coils/filters. Happens when AC runs but room stays humid.

10-Min Fix:

  • Turn off AC. Open front panel.
  • Take out filters. Wash with water + tiny bit of dish soap.
  • Spray coil cleaner or 50/50 water + white vinegar on coils. Let sit 10 mins.
  • Dry filters in shade, not direct sun. Put back.

My AC smelled like a spa after this instead of a gym bag.

Smell #2: Burning/Dusty Smell When You Turn It On

Cause: Dust burned off heating coils after AC was off for weeks. Normal in April/May.

10-Min Fix: Turn AC on, open windows for 15 mins, let it burn off. If smell doesn’t go after 30 mins = call technician. That’s electrical. Don’t risk it.

Smell #3: Chemical/Sweet/Fishy Smell

Cause: Gas leak. Rare but serious.

10-Min Fix: Turn off AC + breaker immediately. Open windows. Call technician. Don’t DIY this one bestie. Gas leaks = not a vibe.

Prevention Hack That Actually Works:

Run AC on “Dry Mode” for 30 mins every Friday. It pulls humidity out without making room freezing. Mold hates dry. My technician taught me this and I haven’t had smell issues since.

When to Actually Call a Technician:

Smell doesn’t go after cleaning + 1 day

AC making weird noises + smell together

Water leaking + burning smell

Average service in Ajman/Dubai = 150-200 AED if you call before peak July. Emergency July call = 300+ AED. Clean filters = save money.

Harami’s Warning System:

If my cat runs out of the room when AC turns on = smell is bad enough to fix now. If he sleeps through it = probably just dust burn-off 😂
